The Gulf Intercoastal Waterway (GICW)

The beginning of the Loop adventure

The adventure starts with a side trip from my home port in Galveston Texas to Mobile AL by way of New Orleans, where I will ultimately cross my wake with a lot of effort and a little luck.

This will be the most challenging part of the trip in my opinion. The Gulf ICW is almost entirely commercial. There are very few recreational facilities. Gas and fuel are often difficult to obtain, and anchoring out is the routine rather than the exception. I will need to be well-prepared with a detailed float plan and all the resources I will need to potentially anchor out for two weeks.

I will not have any reasonable marina choices until I get to New Orleans. With good weather and good luck, I expect the trip to New Orleans to take me 12 to 16 days.

  4. OK, now I’m wondering if you packed enough underwear! With all of these harrowing experiences you’ve had, I can’t imagine you aren’t crapping your pants on a daily basis🤪
The house you passed looks a lot nicer than the others you posted but it sounds like the people you are meeting are nice everywhere you go. Hopefully you won’t encounter any “Stinkers” on your trip.
Looking forward to more adventures; give Gnarly some ear scratches for us.

  5. I am finally up-to-date on your incredible journey! I’m loving all the little stops you have made and the pictures!! Looking forward to your updates. Continued safe travels!!!

  7. Sounds a little interesting! Also cold. temp. here today (3-15) in the 60’s. Keep that knife handy and be safe my friend.

  8. Great!! I lived in Houma La for over a year working on relief from Hurricane Andrew. Really quaint area and nice folks. I love reading your daily update. You are great , handle everything. I have always admired that. Ok all the best and thanks for telling us what all takes place 🙏🙏🙏

  10. Floating houses! And a cable ferry just like they show in old westerns; who would have thought. As I read your last few posts I couldn’t help but think Mittie would be loving the cooler weather. It was cold here today with another snowstorm expected later this week, 48 and rainy doesn’t sound a whole lot better to me. Keep the posts coming, we are all taking this trip vicariously with you!

  11. Wow, this is far different than I expected it to be. I thought…I don’t know what I thought, but it is a hell of an adventure. You seem very well prepared, as I knew you’d be. Great writing.

  12. Great pics and descriptions of your journey! You’d better get a good meal soon or you will be 120 pounds! Gnarly looks like she’s settled in and doing well, does she come up on deck or stay below all the time? Glad you’re encountering nice barges and people along the way. We are both following your journey and cheering you on! LOVE YOU!❤️💗

  13. Interesting events. Amazing you adapt so well. So happy you are enjoying your great adventure

  14. Wow, it seems like you are learning about sailing and your boat. By the time you get back you’ll start acting like a sailor or maybe a pirate!

I love reading your blog every day. Thanks for posting for us.

  15. OMG Steve, I can’t believe you think this is fun! Peril at every turn; that food; the weather; yikes! But I am honored that I was mentioned and will continue to look for evidence that you are eating well. Gnarly looks like she is taking the trip in stride, hopefully she is tethered well when you are in that rough water. Keep the blogs coming, even though my blood pressure rises reading about your adventures.
Your faithful followers, Dan and Paula

  16. Wow…What a story! Glad you didn’t get run over! It sounds like you are having a good time. Be safe and stay well.

  17. Love your posts Steve! So glad you have had beautiful weather so far! Please be careful with all of the traffic, can’t imagine you or Gnarly would fare well by jumping!!

  18. Wow, it looks like you had a kind of crazy day. You are lucky that big boat didn’t ram you.

I am sure getting out on the sea is a big burden off you shoulders. But, I am sure it is nice when you stop for the evening.

Went to lunch yesterday with the girls. We always go to Panda Express.. it usually has good food and it sits in the middle of town. So, it’s convent for all of us.

I hope the next couple of days go well for you and be careful.

    Lea

  19. March 10th. GREAT post! I hope this part of the trip is a shakedown for all the little avoidable problems that experience will solve. I’m really enjoying the read. Thanks for the posts.

  20. Steve, Elvira said to be careful of strangers. And, yes, watch out for those large ships on your trail. HA HA HA

  21. Wow Steve! This day sounded a little stressful! Can’t imagine trying to get the gas tank changed quickly with that big f-ing ship right on your tail!
We love reading your daily updates. You are going to meet a lot of amazing people on this journey. Safe travels!!

  22. Ramen noodles? When we meet up with you, I will come loaded with fruits and veggies, and maybe some homemade cookies😍

  23. Wow what an exciting day! So glad everything turned out okay! Valuable lessons haha :)! We miss you! Can’t wait to hear more, smooth sailing!

  24. March 9th – Love the pictures and your descriptions. I’m sure Gnarly has more to say than that. Have you seen any wildlife, aka gators, etc? Is that water fresh, salt, or brackish? Have you seen any other travelers your size? I’m guessing there aren’t many water skiers in those parts.

  25. Hi Steve! We are so glad you made it through mosquito territory unscathed but we are wondering what the barge captains are saying to each other. “Did you see the crazy guy on the sailboat with the little dog?”
Anyway, I’m worried you aren’t eating right, make sure you order some salads with that those burgers.
Also, are all of your blog followers supposed to get notifications when you post? We haven’t received any so we have started looking each night and thought we would alert you in case your other fans are ignorant like we were.
Give Gnarly some love for us and I will log in to follow you if we won’t be getting notifications. If you don’t mind, I will notify the Party Pals who signed up (on Facebook) that they have to log in to read your posts.

  26. So happy you are on your way! We are following your trip and we wish you good weather and success for your journey! Stay safe! Hugs to you all! ❤️💗

  27. Congrats on getting underway. I had no idea the barge traffic was anything like you described. WOW! You’d have to be exhausted to get any sleep at all with the excitement.

  28. Safe travels! I am looking forward to living vicariously through your great adventures. I know cousin Mittie is smiling down from above!

  29. Steve, have safe travels on this exciting journey – just love the website and updates!

  30. We can’t wait to follow your trip and find a time and place to meet up with you!
Your “love advisor” and I send our wishes for good weather, favorable winds and lots of memorable adventures. Give Gnarly Jo some pets for us.
